Metallica’s attempt to do something different, before St. Anger, before Lulu. “Mama Said” is a country rock ballad that was featured on the album “Load“. I never thought this was a bad song but the video is lackluster. If you want to see James all dressed up like a cowboy and in the back of a fake vehicle playing an acoustic guitar, then this is exactly what you need. Other than that, no performance…a glimpse of the rest of the band (Remember Jason Newsted?) and shitty footage. It’s weird just now seeing this video after all these years though.
Some of the best Metallica ever being covered by some of the best musicians of the newer era of metal masters. Mastodon covering “Orion” and doing a damn fine job at it. Then we have Chimaira covering “Disposable Heroes“, which was one of my favorite ‘Tallica songs growing up. Horns up, heads moving. Enjoy the covers.
Eric Morgan, who lays down the thunder for gloom n doom band A Pale Horse Named Death, will be doing an online chat at 7PM EST time tonight. Login to apalehorsenameddeath.com at 6:45PM EST and start posting questions for Eric to answer. He will be on at 7PM to start answering. Hopefully he won’t be 30 minutes late like some big named band was recently. *cough*metallica*cough.
Metallica has said, “Fuck it, we’re doing our own god damn festival” and so the Orion Music + More fest has been made. With opening acts such as Modest Mouse, we’re all in for an extreme concert series! Tickets go on sale incredibly soon and the festival will be in June. I saw the video before it was taken down. More details soon. VIDEO IS LIVE!!!
I will be one of the supporters against this ridiculous bill. Headbang or GTFO will be closed today and be apart of the black out. I will not upload a widget or change my HTML or anything of the sort. Just closed for the day. Posting will resume tomorrow.
Wikipedia is closed however they have left two pages up. The SOPA and PIPA page. Please read this and use your own judgement.
While the ideas of the the bill seem to have good intentions, it’s just unrealistic and unfair. This bill is a step backwards in our progression.
My blog would get shut down immediately for having images and songs up from bands. My header (which is the new Cannibal Corpse album cover) is an offense and so is this video.
Apparently the latest news coming from Camp’Tallica is that the new album will be a heavier “Black” album. Shorter songs that are straight to the point. Which is good, Death Magnetic was a decent album. The only problem with it is that the riffs were average and the band tends to make them stretch out as long as possible. Metallica are about 8 songs deep into the writing process and hopefully this will make everyone forget that James is a table. I’m sure this next album will be better than LuLu….which would mean that the album could be better than “…And Justice For All“. Which would mean that this new album is already my favorite Metallica album and I’ve heard nothing from it. Not even a power chord strike on the ol’ ESP.
Jacked straight from Rolling Stone, whom interviewed the band:
“We’re about seven, eight songs into it,” Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich tells Rolling Stone magazine about the record, which will once again be produced by Rick Rubin. “We do it in rounds. We come up with something, we leave it, go to the next thing, come up with something basic, leave it and circle back around. Next month we’ll go back and start embellishing: ‘Let’s double that one part and come up with a middle bit.’”
“If Death Magnetic was a logical successor to …And Justice For All, the next album will be a heavier Black Album,” Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett tells Rolling Stone, using the popular nickname for 1991′s “Metallica”. “We’re not going to the depths of complexity that we did for ‘Death Magnetic‘. The stuff we’re coming up with is more groove-oriented, a heavier version of what we were doing in the early Nineties.”
“When people talk about the old stuff, they think ‘Justice’,” Ulrich tells Rolling Stone. “But look at ‘Harvester Of Sorrow’ on that album. It’s a fairly simple five-minute song. And ‘Fuel’ [on 1997's 'Reload'] is an absolute scorcher live. Right now, I’m thinking shorter, more to-the-point.”
With Rick Rubin once again in the producers chair, we hope that his magic will keep Metallica focused on their goal and execute this perfectly. I cannot wait to hear my favorite Metallica album.
I was sharing metal news from my Facebook page before I started this blog. I spammed my wall feed to my friends about shit that is coming out, bands coming to town and every once in a while I did a review for an album. Early 2011 I heard some music that inspired me to do this even more. I wanted to find some bands that were new (to me) and share them. The first band to do this was Woods of Ypres. Then it progressed to other bands in many many different genres. I hit up websites and stalked the Metal Injection forum and had some back n forth banter with some people. I love what Metal Injection and MetalSucks does for the community. They are big time blogs doing some big time shit: interviews, exclusives and tons of content. What really made me want to start MY own blog was this duo of blogs that I thought were great. One is Heavy Blog Is Heavy and the other is American Aftermath.
Kirk turns older today. 49 years old actually and honestly, his integrity has not diminished at all in the last 20-30 years. His solo’s are always a treat, it doesn’t matter if they are super fast or slow and melodic. His leads are always massive and he never half asses a thing. What solo’s do you just absolutely love? Something old school from Ride The Lightning? Something off of the Load albums? Something recent?
I’ll post a couple of my favorites. Leave a comment and let me know what you enjoy from Kirk.
The Mini Band is a band of several children who has taken the internet by storm playing covers of Guns N Roses and Metallica. Their video for “Enter Sandman” has nearly reached 3 million views!!!
Metallica has noticed this and has responded to the band with kinds words.
It’s really cool that they have acknowledged the little cover band and made a personal video just for them. Bravo!
Eerie, unorthodox, unlike any other band at that time. Korn was presented to me in 1999 and within the first few seconds of hearing the track “Freak on a Leash” I knew that this was something special, something amazing. Heavy as fuck but approached from a different angle. I loved the bass guitar work that Fieldy brings to the table. Jonathan Davis‘ voice was something new, scary and beautiful at the same time. Guitars were heavy but more ambient until a chorus came on. Korn’s way of doing heavy music was interesting and it just clicked with me. It was just that sense of “fuck you, I fucking hate you” mentality and the fact I was 14 and pretty much hated everything as well. Timing is everything it seems. The songs are creepy as fuck, while still being heavy and catchy as ever. Korn’s style just appealed to me and I listened to them so fucking much.
At the time…I was a little older, I had cd’s and a walkman. Yeah buddy, carrying around a shit load of cd’s and jamming a fucking walkman into my jeans pocket was the shit. 1999 was a great year, Korn truly helped. In late 1999 and early 2000 I listened to everything they had released. I started with Follow The Leader and damn, that whole thing blew me away! Issues came out in November of 1999 and that album was unexpectedly amazing. I’ve never heard shit like this in my life. The songs are so powerful and emotional. Falling Away From Me, Trash, Make Me Bad, Somebody Someone and Dirty were out of this world. This album captivated me and I worshiped this album. I listened to Follow The Leader and Issues hundreds of times, back to back that winter. My friends even gave me shit: “Oh, Mergel what are you listening to today? Korn?! Figures…” Yeah, it was obvious. I was a fan.
Early the next year (2000), I got my hands on some new music. Except it wasn’t truly new, it was Korn’s older stuff. Their self titled effort and Life Is Peachy. This shit was even more intense and raw. Just truly out there but still held together so well. The music was intense and Davis’ vocals were that of a tortured soul. This shit was nuts. I didn’t know what to think of it. All I knew is when Divine hit my ears I hit the “repeat” button on my cd player. Life Is Peachy has more of a groove to it but it’s still fucking whacked like their self titled release. I know during middle school I listened to Metallica and Metallica only, but I kicked myself for never giving these guys a chance earlier.
I’m thankful for Korn, they opened my eyes and my ears. I realized there is more to metal than just Metallica. I realized and respected the personal lyrics and emotion put into the music. I enjoyed the bass Korn had in their music. It was crazy putting this stuff on in my car with 15 inch JL Audio’s smacking the trunk of the Oldsmobile I drove. It’s a punch to the chest. I’ve just always enjoyed Korn and always will. Their new stuff is hit or miss but stuff I truly love are their first four albums. Korn was different. They were unique. They were what I needed to become more open minded about music.
I feel sorry for Metallica. They set themselves up for it though. Kirk looks bored as hell. James is really into it. This all seems fake. We’re all being trolled. Congrats on their record sales though. I’m sure it’s the worst thing with Metallica‘s name on it since St. Anger.
After all of the hair spray faded and the neon colors died, I was introduced to a band known as Metallica. I heard this little song known as “One” and the ending thrash part stuck with me for days. The next thing I know Enter Sandman, Wherever I May Roam and Unforgiven is being played on the radio and on MTV (Oh MTV, you use to be so worth a damn). With the double bass drums stuck in my head from One, I was hooked and wanted more. I got more and more into them once I heard the singles from their self titled (black) album. I was only 7 years old at this time (1992) and I was in love. I thought their tone was unmatched, their sound was so unique and their songs were so amazing. James Hetfield’s voice was the most epic thing I’ve ever heard, ever.
Of course between 1992-1996 I heard many many more gems from this band. Master of Puppets, Fade To Black, Harvester of Sorrow…I was in second grade singing “Sad but True” for fuck sake. I felt like no one could touch me and that I listened to the best thing in the world. Screw all you hippie 8 year olds and your Barney music, I want to listen to more METALLICA!!!! I was such a fan of everything they did, I literally listened to NOTHING but them for 7 years straight. I had no other musical interest from 1992-1999, until I heard something else that caught my interest (Part III will cover this). Until 1996, I was only able to get my fix of Tallica through the radio. I didn’t have any physical media at all until my friend Randy gave me a cassette of “Load“. Luckily, I had a small cassette player in my bedroom and would listen to this thing non-stop. It was my only copy of anything I ever owned. My property and I loved every second of it. Still to this day, I fully enjoy and respect that album especially the amazing song “The Outlaw Torn“.
I’m not going to get into my personal life too much but let’s just say Load means a lot to me. I know it was the album that pushed Metallica fans away but I grew to like them for all of their music. You appreciate things more when you have very little. Load saved this little 11 year old boy. Between 1997 and 1999 though, I ended up gaining a couple of their albums and doing a lot of borrow trading with friends. I got to enjoy Kill Em All, Fully explore Ride The Lightening, witness the greatness of Master of Puppets and …And Justice For All. I also managed to pick up a cassette copy of ReLoad. I played ReLoad while playing Super Metroid non-stop in 1997. It was my salvation after dealing with life, it was my escape. ReLoad isn’t the best album and I know that but the Memory Remains, Unforgiven II and Devil’s Dance fucking rule.
Soon after that I got my first cd, Garage INC, and yes I played the living crap out of that. Not one but TWO discs of Metallica?! Awesome! At the time, I didn’t know they were cover songs. I thought Disc II was just old demos of previously unreleased stuff. I caught wind that they were cover songs soon after getting the album but it didn’t change my opinion, I still loved that release. Garage INC was amazing: Breadfan, Stone Cold Crazy, Helpless and Am I Evil? Great stuff!
Metallica showed me that metal is the best music in the world. Lyrics of war, politics and death. True feelings and expressing them through guitar riffs. Playing fast, playing slow, screaming loudly or singing softly. Metallica did it all and did it well. I truly didn’t care about any other bands for years. Metallica was there for me when I needed it. The songs I heard got me through some difficult times in my life and helped me cope with it all. I never thought about listening to anything else. Why would I? I had convinced myself that nothing else would compare. Honestly, when they were in their prime…this statement would have been true. Metallica has made the greatest songs and the worst songs. Songs you can’t get out of your head and songs you never want to listen to again. They’ve grown and expanded, they are the world’s most powerful band, they are the reason why so many people in the world listen to metal and picked up a guitar. Through all of the changes…bass players….hair styles….musical approaches…one thing is for sure. Metallica is definitely a band I am thankful for.
